The Usui System of Natural Healing Reiki (Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki)
Reiki’s teaching history is one of oral tradition. Training is passed, in person, from Reiki Master to each student. An important aspect of the training is the development of a personal relationship between the student and a Master. This relationship offers the student support in their Reiki practice for as long as they remain a student of that Master.
Each student’s Reiki practice is a personal one and, by its nature, is functional. Reiki is not abstract or academic; nor is it a belief system. Reiki itself, and the experience of the student’s practice of it, becomes the teacher.
Reiki Degrees and Attunements
Anne offers three Degrees of Reiki training, each serving a distinct function in practice. All Reiki is the same; what differs is how it is practiced. Each Degree is achieved through an attunement process — a series of initiations performed ceremonially by the Master — that allows students to align permanently with the healing vibration of Reiki energy. Each initiation carries its own meaning and is necessary for a complete, lasting attunement. There are currently no state-mandated requirements or licensing for Reiki, so classes vary among lineages and teachers. Anne’s students of the Usui System of Natural Healing receive a certificate from her as their Teaching Master, confirming they have achieved the necessary training for each Degree.
First Degree Reiki
Reiki I
Fee: $225; $75 discount to Veterans and/or their caregivers
First Degree training works in the physical realm. Reiki is presented simply: Hands on, Reiki on. Hands off, Reiki off. Students learn the Reiki hand positions and practice them — first on themselves, then on others — following the form of a full treatment. Anne guides students to calm and center themselves, become fully present, and allow the energy to flow.
The first session opens with the oral history of Reiki as passed down from Anne’s Teaching Master, followed by a demonstration of hand positions for self-treatment, which students practice along with. Self-practice comes first because it is the foundation of all Reiki — something to be continuously developed as the practitioner matures.
Subsequent sessions shift focus to treating others. Anne demonstrates and discusses hand positions for the head and chest, the front torso, and the back torso — one area per session — with time for questions and for each student to practice both giving and receiving. Because the hand positions correspond to most of the body’s major organs, glands, and systems, Anne briefly reviews the relevant physical and metaphysical aspects of each area. There is no diagnosing — only observing and honoring what is received through the hands. By the end of First Degree training, every student has both given and received a complete Reiki treatment.
Training typically takes place over three days, in four sessions of two and a half hours each. Each session is followed by an initiation that reconnects students with their own natural healing ability.
Students receive a copy of Teaching Master Penelope Jewell’s book Reiki: A Guide to Your Practice of Reiki Healing Energy, a certificate of training, and an open invitation to Anne’s free monthly Reiki Shares — gatherings for group discussion and hands-on practice.
Second Degree Reiki
Reiki II
Fee: $500
After First Degree training, Reiki flows automatically whenever hands are placed on the body. Second Degree builds on that foundation, introducing a conscious, intentional use of Reiki.
Students receive in-depth instruction and generous practice time with three Reiki symbols. Learning these symbols means committing them to memory and holding them with respect — they are not written again except in the presence of the Teaching Master, and are not shown to others.
One function of Second Degree is to increase and focus the flow of Reiki in hands-on treatment. Students also learn to work beyond the physical realm — to send Reiki in a focused way to a person or situation across any time or distance, as though a physical treatment were being given.
Before beginning Second Degree training, students must have maintained a consistent self-practice for a minimum of three months following First Degree, and must have given at least three full Reiki treatments to others. These full treatments can be completed at Anne’s free monthly Reiki Shares.
Training takes place in two sessions over several days to a week and includes one initiation and attunement. Students receive a Second Degree guidebook, a certificate of training, and an invitation to Anne’s free monthly Reiki Shares, which at this level include symbol review and a group distant send.
Third Degree Reiki
Reiki Master
Fee: $10,000
Master Candidates train with Anne in an apprentice-mentor model, gradually moving from assisting to leading public talks and First and Second Degree classes. Training includes deep integration of Reiki teachings and practice, as well as guidance in developing each Candidate’s individual Master Project. After this committed period of training — typically several years — the Candidate receives the Master attunement from Anne, becoming an Initiate.
In Anne’s lineage, Reiki Mastery is a calling, not a certification. The Master’s path requires time, devotion, and personal integrity — living congruently with one’s deepest values. That commitment must be genuinely acknowledged before a student advances to Master training.
Being a Reiki Master is a way of life. Masters commit their personal and professional lives to the healing art of Reiki and the lifestyle it engenders. Anne maintains a strong daily self-practice, leads classes, writes articles, offers treatment sessions to the public, and volunteers at her local Veterans Administration Medical Center — all while remaining a present and available partner on each of her students’ paths.
